Syria's government on Feb. 14 condemned Turkey for two days of shelling targeting mainly Kurdish forces in the northern province of Aleppo and urged the United Nations to act, state media said.

The Turkish army shelled positions held by Kurdish-backed militia in northern Syria for a second day on Feb. 14, killing two militants, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group has said. 

More than 500 people, including dozens of civilians, have been killed since a major Russian-backed regime offensive in Syria's Aleppo province began this month, a monitor said Feb. 10.

A suicide car bomber dispatched by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) struck near a police officers' club in the Syrian capital on Feb. 9, killing at least 10 people and destroying a number of cars.

The Turkish government fears that fierce fighting in Syria's Aleppo province will spark the arrival of up to 600,000 migrants at its border in a "worst case scenario", Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmu? said on Feb. 8.
                   

An alliance of Kurdish and Arab rebels advanced Dec. 24 against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria's north in a new offensive backed by U.S.-led air strikes, its spokesman said.

Talal Sello, spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces, told AFP the SDF offensive was launched late Dec. 23 in the Aleppo province.  

Amnesty International said on Dec. 23 Russian air raids have killed hundreds of civilians in Syria, many in targeted strikes that could constitute war crimes, since beginning nearly three months ago.

French and Russian warplanes hit targets of the Islamic State group in Syria on Tuesday, Reuters reported.

The French airstrikes, in which 10 warplanes were involved, targeted a command post and a recruitment centre for jihadist fighters in the town of Raqqa, the stronghold of the the Islamic State group.

Mustard gas was used during summer fighting in Syria but it was not clear by whom, the global chemical weapons watchdog said on Nov 5, while jihadists seized a key town from regime forces.

A "significant increase" of air strikes on Syrian hospitals recently has killed at least 35 patients and medical staff and wounded 72, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said on Oct. 29.
