A large-scale operation to clean all the paved sections of the Kifissos River is being launched by the Attica Region, removing tons of debris and waste, so that with the full release of the cross-section there will be an unimpeded flow of stormwater.

Two police officers detained after hitting and killing a pedestrian with their patrol car in southern Athens on Wednesday were released, state-run broadcaster ERT reported Thursday. 

According to eye-witness testimonies, no evidence emerged that they had run a red traffic light, ERT said, though the official investigation is still under way.

Three prisoners escaped from a police car that was transferring them to a police station in the district of Moschato on Tuesday, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.
