97 dead, scores injured in Indonesian quake

At least 97 people were killed and scores injured when a strong earthquake struck western Indonesia Dec. 7 and flattened hundreds of homes and mosques, with officials warning the death toll would likely rise.

The shallow 6.5-magnitude quake struck Pidie Jaya district in Aceh province at dawn as many in the mainly Muslim region on Sumatra island were preparing for morning prayers.

Powerful earthquake recorded in Indonesia

A powerful and shallow 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, according to US Geological Survey.

The epicentre was 502 miles southwest of Padang and it was 10 km deep. Up to now, there were no reports of damage or casualties.

Indonesian authorities issued a tsunami warning for the regions of West Sumatra, North Sumatra and Aceh.
