Athens municipal worker killed in truck crash

A 53-year-old local authority worker died on Friday as a result of injuries sustained while on the job, the Athens-Macedonian News Agency has reported.

The unnamed man sustained crushing injuries when the garbage truck he was driving crashed on NATO Avenue in the northern suburb of Ano Liosia at around 5 a.m. in the morning.

Woman indicted for allegedly attacking babies

A 55-year-old woman was indicted in Athens on Thursday on charges of inflicting bodily harm to babies and resisting arrest, and was given until Friday to prepare her defense.

The woman had been arrested for allegedly scratching babies with her nails or a sharp object on a number of occasions at a mall in Aghios Dimitrios, southern Athens.

Police exchange fire with would-be safe robbers

Police in Athens in the early hours of Tuesday exchanged fire with a group of men believed to be behind a string of safe robberies at industrial facilities around Attica and Viotia.

The incident occurred around 4.30 a.m. as officers of the OPKE squad tried to question the passengers of a car in Ano Liosia, northern Athens, following an attempted break-in at a pharmaceutical company.

Police break up two gangs

A gang distributing large quantities of contraband cigarettes in Greece has been unraveled, police said Thursday. 

According to Attica Police Chief Christos Papazafiris, more than 16 million cigarettes and 4 tons of tobacco were confiscated.

The amount of money in lost tax and levy revenues, he said, amounted to more than 5 million euros.

Police smash ring targeting cabbies

Police said they arrested four men aged 18, 19, 21 and 23 on Thursday on suspicion of being part of a gang that robbed taxi drivers in the area of Ano Liosia, northern Athens.

The gang allegedly attacked cabbies during the evening hours. Posing as customers, they would physically assault the drivers, making off with money, mobile phones and other electronic devices.
