The Ridiculous Darkness named best play of 50th Bitef

BELGRADE - Wolfram Lotz's the Ridiculous Darkness, directed by the Czech Republic's Dusan David Parízek and produced by Burgtheater Vienna, has been named the best play of the 50th Belgrade International Theatre Festival - Bitef.

The Mira Trailovic Grand Prix was handed out to Parizek by an international jury.

Serbia's Bitef Shows no Signs of Slowing in 50th Year

During the festival, Belgrade theatre fans will get to see twelve different theatre performances until October 2.

Bitef's slogan this year is the somewhat abstract "On the Back of the Frenzied Bull," a metaphor for the turbulent times that Europe is currently going through.

Bitef has never been about making suggestions as to where theatre is going or should go.

Renowned theatrologist Jovan Ćirilov passes away

BELGRADE -- Serbian theatrologist Jovan Ćirilov died aged 84 in Belgrade on Sunday, the Yugoslav Drama Theater (JDP) said in a statement.

Ćirilov was art director and selector of the Bitef theater festival since its establishment in 1967 and long-term director of the JDP.
