According to the NHS, your Body Mass Index (BMI) should sit somewhere between 18.5 and 24.9. Anything over that, and you're overweight.

So something's gone seriously wrong when you're just 14 years old and your BMI is a whopping 100.

Four in 10 Greek children are overweight and two in 10 boys are obese, according to the latest findings of the World Health Organization's European Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI).

Some 20.5 percent of men and 41 percent of women in Turkey are obese, according to the Health Ministry's National Nutrition and Health Survey. 

A study released Feb. 26 revealed that obesity is worsening for young children in the United States.

The obesity rate for second graders (aged around 7-8) in Turkey rose to 10 percent in 2017, up from 6.5 percent in 2009, Health Minister Ahmet Demircan said on Nov. 14, World Diabetes Day. 

The most recent scientific data on global obesity rates have proved disappointing, as the World Obesity Federation has warned that if current trends continue, 2.7 billion adults will be overweight or obese by 2025. Moreover, 268 million children of school age (5-18) will be overweight, with an additional 91 million considered obese.

Nearly 124 million children in the world suffer from severe obesity, the World Health Organization warned in a report quoted by Mediapool.

Greece has the highest proportion of obese boys in Europe (16.7% of the population), while Malta has the most obese girls (11.3%), according to a new international study published in the medical journal “The Lancet” , on occasion of World Obesity Day on 11 October.
Moldova has the smallest obesity rates in Europe (3.2% of the population) and 5% in boys .

Childhood obesity is soaring across the world, increasing more than tenfold over the past four decades, putting many millions at risk of poor health and an early death, according to the biggest ever analysis of the data.

Obesity rates in Greece and around the world are rising and scientists estimate that by 2025, 480,000 Greek school-age children will be obese or overweight.

The Hellenic Association for the Study of Obesity, Metabolism and Eating Disorders (EPAMEDI) warns Greek society to “Treat obesity today to avoid the consequences later”, in a message just ahead of World Obesity Day (11/10).
