Coalition for a European Montenegro

A plot to unseat Milo Djukanovic as Prime Minister of Montenegro failed to gain enough votes in parliament on Wednesday night, after 42 of a total of 81 MPs voted against the motion of no-confidence - which Djakanovic himself had called.

More than half the senior officials in the leadership of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, will be replaced by young activists, the party announced on Thursday.

Montenegro's ruling party congress, scheduled for next week, is expected to reaffirm Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic's position as leader and tighten party discipline.

Djukanovic, a former communist, has led Montenegro for almost 25 years. He is seeking his seventh mandate as leader of a party that has been in power without interruption since the beginning of the nineties.

The Speaker of Parliament, Ranko Krivokapic, on Wednesday was re-elected leader of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in an outcome that some see as an opportunity for the party to distance itself from the dominant Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS.

The opposition alliance, the Democratic Front, on Thursday announced that it is inviting the leaders of the junior ruling party, the Social Democratic Party, to help them form a "crisis government" and to replace the government led by the Democratic Party of Socialists, DPS, for the last 25 years.

Djukanovic expressed frustration on Monday that the smaller party in the ruling coalition, the Social Democratic Party, SDP, led by parliament speaker Ranko Krivokapic, has often voted with opposition MPs on important laws in recent years.
