Diplomatic mission

Perhaps the time has come to do away with guarding diplomatic missions and residences in Greece. Authorities' tolerance of attacks has canceled out the need for a police presence.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila told a meeting on Monday with heads of Romanian diplomatic missions accredited abroad that their role is to be the "messengers" of Romania's economic offerings, "facilitators" of contracts with the local business communities in the countries of residence.

The Embassy of Romania in Athens is focused on the events that ensued recent wildfires in Greece, trying to find out if there are Romanians among the affected persons. So far, no requests for consular assistance have been registered, according to Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE).

Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu said on Sunday, referring to the assessment of Romania's embassies abroad, that, in general, these "have done their job."

Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu welcomes the entry into force on May 1, 2018 of the directive on the coordination and cooperation measures to facilitate consular protection for unrepresented citizens of the Union in third countries, according to a press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) on Tuesday.

Citizens of the European Union located in countries outside the Union will be able to turn to the Bulgarian embassy or consulate if they do not have representation in their own country. They will enjoy the same rights as Bulgarian citizens.
 

Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Melescanu stated on Saturday that the assessment of the activity of Romania's embassies at the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) level is to be completed in maximum ten days and mentioned that there is no list of heads of diplomatic missions who are to be assessed, the action being carried out annually.

The Turkish Embassy in Washington announced on Nov. 9 that Turkey’s diplomatic and consular missions in the U.S. have started accepting visa applications of U.S. citizens on a limited basis.

Self-proclaimed anarchists burst into the Spanish embassy in Athens on Wednesday and threw leaflets in favor of Catalonian independence, an embassy official said.

The embassy staff evacuated the premises leaving only a few diplomats inside, the official said. There were no reports of damage or injuries.
