Compensation platform expected to open next week
The platform where people who incurred damages from this week's Attica wildfire can apply for compensation will open on August 21, according to Deputy Civil Protection Minister Christos Triandopoulos. Inspections in the affected municipalities are ongoing, with 130 having been conducted by Thursday.

Parts of Attica at risk of desertification
The areas on the southeastern and eastern side of Mount Penteli, in northeast Athens, which have burned repeatedly in the last 30 years, are at risk of desertification. The part of the mountain that faces the towns of Nea Makri, Marathon, Drafi, Penteli and Dioni are areas that have been greatly affected by so many fires.

Mass evacuations in Athens area as raging fire spreads to Mount Penteli
A fire that erupted northeast of Athens on Sunday has spread to Mount Penteli, just north of the Greek capital, prompting the evacuation of several settlements.
The fast-moving blaze, fueled by hot and windy conditions, has already destroyed trees, homes, and vehicles, and has sent thick smoke clouds over the city.

Dramatic hours are unfolding in northeastern Attica as the fire that started in Varnava on Sunday afternoon is “rapidly advancing and has reached Mount Penteli,” as announced by the Fire Department spokesperson shortly before 6 AM today, “despite the superhuman efforts of all civil protection forces.”
