Türkiye's first local car Togg, which is expected to be on the streets in the first quarter of next year, has been given a head start with a law decreasing the Special Consumption Tax (ÖTV) for electric cars of its class.

The combined sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Turkey declined by 2.4 percent in April from a year ago to 60,000 units, the Automotive Distributor Association (ODD) has said.

Motorists in Turkey are increasingly turning to electric vehicles as driving a car has become more costly due to higher gasoline prices.

Gasoline prices nearly doubled in the past year in Turkey, which means car owners need to allocate a larger portion of their income to commute.

"This day is very important for Serbia, today we are starting a completely new era in investments in our country. Today we signed an agreement on financing an electric car that will be produced in Kragujevac. Now there is a transition period until 2023, and from 2024 we will start production of one model", said Vui.

Nissan is working with the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on a new type of battery for electric vehicles that promise to charge quicker and be lighter yet safe, the Japanese automaker said on April 8.

The all-solid-state battery will replace the lithium-ion battery now in use for a 2028 product launch and a pilot plant launch in 2024, according to Nissan.

Turkey's automotive market shrank more than 33 percent on an annual basis in March, according to data from the Automotive Distributors' Association (ODD).

Passenger car sales fell by 34.3 percent in the month from a year ago to 50,170 units, while the decline in light commercial vehicle sales was nearly 30 percent.
