A fishing boat with nine fishermen and a captain on board sank on Wednesday after hitting the shallows in the sea off the town of ​​Naoussa, Paros.

All passengers and the captain were picked up by another fishing vessel and brought ashore.

Ioannis Vekris, 23, is the youngest fisherman on Amorgos and part of a new generation that is starting to reap the rewards of a revival of their profession after a decade of efforts.

Ebif is not alone. More than hundred other foreigners like him have found work on the country's small fishing fleet, whose owners say local youngsters are unwilling to engage in the profession.

Mostly from Egypt and Turkey, they tend to replace the local fishermen when they retire.

On June 29, the Orthodox Church honours the memory of the great apostles Peter and Paul.
