The Mayor of Athens and member of PASOK, steps forward and declares his presence in the rapid developments within the party, calling for an immediate election of party leader

The rumbling since Sunday's European election - in which socialist PASOK remained stranded in third place, with only a slight increase in its percentage - was finally given voice on Wednesday by senior party official Odysseas Konstantinopoulos, who openly raised the issue of Nikos Androulakis' leadership, calling for the immediate launch of procedures leading to elections for a leader in 2024.<

PASOK MEP Nikos Papandreou has entered the ongoing debate about the future of the socialist party's leadership following disappointing results in the recent European elections. 

Sources within PASOK on Wednesday dismissed the idea of expediting the leadership elections in response to the socialist party's lackluster performance in the recent European Parliament elections.

"We will not allow the party to sink into navel-gazing," the sources said.

PASOK MP Odysseas Konstantinopoulos has called for a leadership change within the socialist party following the disappointing outcome of the recent European election.

PASOK ranked third, trailing behind main SYRIZA opposition, securing 12.79% of the vote and three seats. Leader Nikos Androulakis had aimed for a second-place finish.

"I request that PASOK's governing bodies convene immediately, within the next week, and decide on a specific timetable," the PASOK MP says in a letter to the party secretary

The candidates who have so far gathered the most votes are Avtias and Meimarakis from ND, Arvanitis and Farantouris from SYRIZA, and Papandreou and Maniatis from PASOK

Socialist PASOK expressed reserved optimism after the publication of the official exit poll for Sunday's European Parliament vote, expressing satisfaction with its improved performance - albeit by a small margin.

If the latest opinion polls are confirmed, there will be no big surprise on the night of June 9 regarding the distribution of the 21 seats available to Greece in the European Parliament.

Ruling New Democracy would elect seven to eight MEPs, versus three to four for SYRIA and three for PASOK.
