Adoptions in Greece on the rise

There were 393 registered adoptions in 2017, marking a 77.8 percent rise compared to 2016, when there were 221, according to Greek statistics agency ELSTAT.

The largest increase was recorded in the area including the Aegean islands and Crete, with a 93.8 percent rise.

Greek July unemployment drops to 19 percent , lowest since August 2011

Greece's jobless rate eased to 19 percent in July from 19.1 percent in the previous month, falling to its lowest level since August 2011, data from the country's statistics service ELSTAT showed on Thursday.

Seasonally adjusted data showed the number of unemployed at 897,861 people, with younger persons aged up to 24 bearing the brunt of being out of work.

Percentage of Greeks at risk of poverty declines

In 2017, 18.1 percent of Greece's population were at risk of poverty, marginally lower than the 18.2 percent estimated in 2016, the Greek statistical authority (ELSTAT) said on Thursday.

According to a survey conducted on a sample of 6,176 households around the country, average monthly spending on purchases totaled 1,415 euros (547.51 euros per person).

Appeals Council to rule on former ELSTAT chief's case for third time

The case of Greece's former statistics agency chief Andreas Georgiou will go to the Council of Appeals for a third time over accusations he falsified budget data to justify Greece's first international bailout.

The former chief of ELSTAT has already been cleared twice in judgments by the Council of Appeals Court Judges.
