Horseracing rules found on 2,000-year-old tablet in central Turkey

Horseracing rules written on a 2,000-year-old tablet were uncovered in the Bey?ehir district of the Central Anatolian province of Konya on May 2.   

The tablet, which is part of the Lukuyanus Monument, was apparently built to honor a jockey named Lukuyanus, who died at an early age in the Pisidia era. 

Beirut's Ottoman-era Hippodrome faces run for money

Beirut's Hippodrome has survived wars and relentless upheaval but the iconic racetrack, where rival fighters once gathered to bet on their days off, is approaching its centenary facing an uncertain future.

The Hippodrome was built in 1916 by the Ottoman Turks. During the civil war it was used as a neutral site where enemy combatants could meet.

Renk wins Gazi Derby

Jockey Ahmet Çelik rode thoroughbred Renk to victory on June 28 at the Gazi Derby, Turkey's most prestigious horse race.

Twenty-one Turkish three-year-old thoroughbreds competed in the derby for the 1.35 million Turkish Lira prize on the 2,400-meter grass track.

Thoroughbreds in line for Turkey's Gazi Derby

Turkey?s most prestigious horse race, the Gazi Derby, will run for its 89th time on June 28 at the Veliefendi Hippodrome in Istanbul.

Twenty-two Turkish three-year-old thoroughbreds will be competing for the 1.35 million Turkish Lira prize at 5:15 p.m. at the 2,400-meter grass track. The pride of owning a Gazi winning horse is invaluable.
