Turkey submits new extradition request from Greece for 8 military defectors

Turkey will submit a request for the extradition of the 8 military officers who defected to Greece after the failed coup attempt in Turkey anew, following the ruling by the Greek Supreme Court on Thursday that they would not be extradited. The 8 men were charged with with participating in a plot to overthrow the Erdogan government.

Supreme Court rejects extradition request for all eight Turkish servicemen

The country's Supreme Court has rejected the extradition request for all eight Turkish servicemen who fled to Greece in a helicopter in the wake of a failed military coup in July.

Presiding judge Giorgos Sakkas, reading out the decision on Thursday, said the eight were unlikely to face a fair trial if returned to their home country.

The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its verdict Thursday on whether or not to extradite eight Turkish servicemen who fled to Greece in a helicopter after a failed military coup in July.

Ankara says the soldiers were involved in the July 15 coup attempt against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and has demanded their swift extradition.

Verdict on Turkish officers' extradition due on Thursday

A critical Supreme Court ruling on whether to extradite eight Turkish military officers who fled to Greece after a failed Turkish coup in July was on Monday put off until Thursday.

The reason given for the postponement was twofold: that the case required further deliberation and that one of the judges was sick.

Greece's Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on Jan. 26 on whether or not to extradite eight Turkish soldiers who fled to Greece in a helicopter after a failed military coup in July, the Athens News Agency reported. 

Turkey alleges the men were involved in the July 2016 failed coup attempt and has demanded their swift extradition.
