Asylum decision for Turkish officer will have 'negative impacts,' warns Ankara

A decision by Greece's asylum appeals committee to grant protection to one of eight Turkish officers accused by Ankara of participating in the botched coup of 2016, will have "negative impacts on bilateral relations," Turkey's Foreign Ministry was quoted by Daily Sabah as saying.

The 35-year-old officer was serving in the Turkish police’s surveillance unit making his case quite interesting for the Greek authorities.

Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on June 19 stressed "respect for the judicial rulings" regarding the eight Turkish soldiers accused of taking part in last year's coup attempt, whose extradition to Turkey was previously rejected.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, however, once again stated that the soldiers "should not damage" the relationship between Ankara and Athens.
