Funding gaps halt Attica flood control works

Despite a comprehensive flood-control plan for Attica, most projects remain on paper due to funding challenges. The region has 158 proposed projects, with a total budget of €1.2 billion. However, only 54 are expected to break ground in the next year, while 104 projects are still undergoing studies for potential funding by 2028. 

Deadly attack in which boy, 5, died likely planned in advance

It would appear that the perpetrators of the deadly attack on a car in Markopoulo, eastern Attica, in which a five-year-old Roma boy died as a result of a gunshot to the head, had planned an ambush in advance.

Police at the crime scene recovered fifteen 9 mm and eight 40 mm casings, indicating that the attackers used two guns in the ambush.

Police investigate explosion outside event venue

Police in southeastern Attica are investigating the explosion of a device outside an event venue on the Athens-Sounio road.

The device had been placed on a bench outside the property, which is located near Agia Marina in Koropi.

The blast, which occurred shortly after midnight, caused material damage to the venue's fencing and shattered windows in adjacent businesses.

Wildfire in Koropi easing

A wildfire that broke out earlier on Thursday among low vegetation in East Attica was easing, sources from the Fire Service said. 

There were 25 fire engines with 85-member crew, four teams of firefighters on foot, two firefighting aircraft and five water dropping helicopters remain in the area of Agia Marina in Koropi.

The fire broke out shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday morning in an outdoor area in Agia Marina Koropi.

The flames are burning near a residential area and a 112, was sent out asking residents in the area of Megalo Metochi Agia Marina to move to Koropi Avenue – Agia Marina.

Where is the plan?

Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias struck a somber tone last week when he appeared on our television screens saying that the Fire Service and the police were in possession of camera footage showing an arsonist setting fire to dried brush in eastern Attica. He also claimed that the footage would be made public.
