Migrant farm workers see camp go up in smoke

Dozens of migrant farm workers in Nea Manolada in the northwestern Peloponnese saw their scant belongings go up in smoke on Thursday morning after a fire burned through a camp of makeshift shelters.

There were no injuries reported during the incident, though the workers, who are mostly Bangladeshi migrants, lamented the loss of hard-earned cash and important papers like passports.

Firefighters battle blaze in Bangladeshi camp in Ilia

A large crew of firemen on Thursday were trying to put out a blaze burning through a camp where Bangladeshi nationals live in the town of Nea Manolada, in the regional unit of Ilia, southwestern Greece, a local news website reported on Thursday.

The fire broke out on Wednesday morning and spread after gas bottles exploded, according to ilialive.gr.

Halt to appeal of Manolada ruling

The government's request for the review of a European court ruling ordering Greece to pay some 600,000 euros in damages for failing to protect 42 migrant strawberry pickers who were shot at by their foreman in Manolada in the Peloponnese in 2013, will be revoked, according to the State Legal Council.

A roadside brawl between Bangladeshi migrant workers near Manolada, in the Peloponnese, late on Thursday resulted in two of the men suffering injuries.

According to Patrastimes.gr, three Bangladeshis attacked two of their compatriots in a bid to rob them and left them bleeding on the side of the Pyrgos-Patra national highway.

Only two of the four men on trial for shooting and injuring 28 migrant workers at a strawberry farm in Nea Manolada last year were convicted by a court in Patra on Wednesday.

The court cleared two men of all charges, found one guilty of causing bodily harm and another being an accessory to the crime.
