Maryland's governor will issue a mass pardon of drug offenses, U.S. media reported Sunday, in a far-reaching move forgiving 175,000 low-level marijuana convictions across multiple decades.

Remembering Paul Sarbanes
The rural town of Salisbury, Maryland is an unlikely place from which a young man imbued with the high ideals and values of Hellenism would make his way to the world stage. It is in this small town on Maryland's Eastern Shore that on February 3, 1933, Panagiotis Spyros Sarbanes was born, who would in time grow into the legendary Senator Paul S. Sarbanes.

Paul Sarbanes, Greek-American Senator, dies at 87
Paul Sarbanes, a longtime US senator from Maryland who championed the enforcement of an arms embargo against Turkey after the 1974 invasion of Cyprus, has died at the age of 87.
His death was announced by his son, US Representative John Sarbanes.
"My father, Senator Paul S. Sarbanes, passed away peacefully this evening in Baltimore," his son's statement said.

Greek evangelical missionary turns abolitionist
While large numbers of Greeks did not arrive in the US until the 1880s, quite a few made their way across the Atlantic much earlier. In my own state of Maryland, archives indicate that Michael Ury (Youris) became a naturalized citizen by act of the General Assembly of Maryland in 1725.
