Maryland's governor will issue a mass pardon of drug offenses, U.S. media reported Sunday, in a far-reaching move forgiving 175,000 low-level marijuana convictions across multiple decades.

The complex process of clearing the tangled wreckage of the Baltimore bridge that collapsed spectacularly this week was set to begin Saturday with removal of a first section, officials said.

The collapse killed six people and blocked traffic through the busy U.S. port.

It is in this small town on Maryland's Eastern Shore that on February 3, 1933, Panagiotis Spyros Sarbanes was born, who would in time grow into the legendary Senator Paul S. Sarbanes.

Hellenism recently lost one of its most important representatives in the United States, Paul Sarbanes, who died at 87. The iconic politician left behind more than an extremely important body of work in American politics and a great contribution to the Greek-American community.

The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association said it "mourned profoundly" the death of Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades, describing him as a "titan" of the Greek-American community.

Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades, helped clean up the Chesapeake Bay and corporate scandals and pressured Richard Nixon to resign as president, died on Sunday at 87.

Paul Sarbanes, a longtime US senator from Maryland who championed the enforcement of an arms embargo against Turkey after the 1974 invasion of Cyprus, has died at the age of 87.

His death was announced by his son, US Representative John Sarbanes. 

"My father, Senator Paul S. Sarbanes, passed away peacefully this evening in Baltimore," his son's statement said.
