Fire in Attica: 32 children transferred from the Penteli Protection Centre to Ilion

The Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family has been in immediate mobilization since early Sunday afternoon (11/08/2024) when the major fires broke out in Attica, to protect guests and workers in structures supervised by the Ministry and located in areas affected or threatened by the fires.

Specifically, as stated in an announcement:

Mass evacuations in Athens area as raging fire spreads to Mount Penteli

A fire that erupted northeast of Athens on Sunday has spread to Mount Penteli, just north of the Greek capital, prompting the evacuation of several settlements.

The fast-moving blaze, fueled by hot and windy conditions, has already destroyed trees, homes, and vehicles, and has sent thick smoke clouds over the city.

New ATM blast in northern Athens

Police were seeking the perpetrators behind an explosion shortly after 4 a.m. on Tuesday that destroyed an ATM in Melissia, northeastern Athens.

According to police, the assailants planted the device on the ATM, which was outside a supermarket, and blew open the machine before fleeing with an undetermined sum of cash.

The blast caused damage but no injuries.

One injured in apartment fire in Athens suburb

One person was injured in a fire that started inside a first-floor apartment in the northern Athenian suburb of Melissia on Tuesday afternoon.

The unidentified person was created for breathing difficulties at a local hospital.

Another four people were rescued by firemen from a second-floor balcony. None of them was injured.

ATM blown up in northern Athens; no injuries

Unknown assailants blew up a cash machine at the entrance of a supermarket in northern Athens early Thursday morning, Greek broadcaster Skai reported.

The explosion happened at 4.05 a.m., at the corner of Eleftheriou Venizelou and Souliou streets, in the suburb of Melissia.

The ATM suffered damages and the glass entrance was shattered.

Athens suburbs hit by heavy rainfall, flash floods

Cars float in a parking lot-turned-muddy lake following a squall in the northern Athens suburb of Maroussi, Thursday. Authorities urged drivers to avoid the area and closed a side road off the main highway leading north out of the capital. The fire department received more than 200 calls for assistance, including pumping water from flooded homes and businesses.

Unregistered properties to be confiscated

The state is set to become the legal owner of properties in 111 areas around the country (including 20 in Athens and Thessaloniki) whose real owners have not declared their assets to the land registry offices (Ktimatologio) that are about to complete 14 years of operation, according to the head of the property owners federation (POMIDA).

Heavy rain hampers traffic, power supplies

Heavy rainfall led to traffic being interrupted on Pireos Street between Petrou Ralli and Chamosternas Streets in central Athens on Thursday.

Stormy conditions also resulted in delays to the capital's scheduled metro services.

The weather also led to power cuts in the areas of Melissia, Vrilissia, Penteli and Aghia Paraskevi in the northern suburbs.
