Romania's opposition on Tuesday scored an important parliamentary victory when MPs backed its nomination of ex-premier Mihai Razvan Ungureanu as the next director of the Foreign Intelligence Service, SIE.

National Liberal Party (PNL) co-chair Vasile Blaga on Sunday asked the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Victor Ponta, announcing that, on the day of the debate on the censure motion, the Liberals will organise a human chain around the Palace of Parliament.

The national executive committee of Romania's ruling Social Democratic Party, PSD, on Thursday approved a new pact with a junior party in the governing coalition, aimed at shoring up support for the current centre-left government.

The new National Liberal Party (made up of the former PNL - the National Liberal Party and the former PDL - Democratic Liberal Party) would collect the most votes, if parliamentary elections were to be held in Romania next Sunday, says a poll conducted by the CSCI and sent to AGERPRES.

The National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR, a junior partner in the ruling coalition) does not support a change of the Government led by Prime Minister Victor Ponta, UNPR Secretary General Neculai Ontanu declared after his party's Standing National Political Bureau meeting on Monday.

National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR) Chairman Gabriel Oprea in Poiana Brasov on Saturday said, in reply to a question referring to Marian Vanghelie's statement that he had room in his cell for Ponta and Oprea, that during his entire political activity his name "has never been linked to any scandal," because he is a jurist, a military, and he has sought to observe the law.

National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR) Chairman Gabriel Oprea in Constanta on Saturday mentioned that the political group he represents supports the current Government and keeps its word, as it has proved so far, as it is a party doing politics for the national interest.
