Monument to Asia Minor Greeks vandalized in Thessaloniki

Police in Thessaloniki are investigating the vandalism of a monument to the Greeks of Pontus and Asia Minor in which a metal sculpture attached to it was removed and stolen.

The Monument of Pontic and Asia Minor Hellenism, which comprises a six-meter inclined column, topped by seven illuminated birds, was erected in the Municipality of Neapoli-Sykies in 2023.

Gov’t publishes 7 new general urban plans

Another seven General Urban Plans (GUP) for towns and town units were published in the Government Gazette on Thursday, specifying land use and terms and restrictions of construction.

Based on modern urban practices, the plans take into account sustainable urban mobility, and the protection of state and private property.

Unidentified man stabs 40-year old in stomach and head

A 40-year old man was stabbed on Saturday night in western Thessaloniki. 

According to information from Thestival, the man was attacked with a sharp object by an unidentified person in the Sykies neighborhood. The victim was injured in the abdomen and the head. The attack's incentive remains unknown. 

The man, of Albanian descent, was admitted to Papageorgiou Hospital. 

Father remanded in custody after admitting to killing daughter

A 69-year-old man, accused of killing his 42-year-old daughter in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, has been placed in custody following his testimony to the authorities. The suspect, who is the victim's father, stated that he took his daughter's life because he couldn't bear to witness her suffering from multiple sclerosis.

Police investigate homicide, attempted suicide

A 42-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment in Thessaloniki, northern Greece, and there is suspicion that her own father is responsible for the crime. The victim's body was discovered by her brother at her residence in the Sykies district on Tuesday. A forensic examination indicated that she had been suffocated.

Race continues for second place in Thessaloniki mayoral runoff

With just over 60 percent of votes counted on Monday morning, the conservative New Democracy-backed candidate for Thessaloniki mayor Nikos Tachiaos was projected to secure 22.56 percent while Constantinos Zervas and Giorgos Orphanos fought it out for second place with 14.76 percent and 14.41 percent respectively ahead of the runoff next weekend.

ATM targeted in Thessaloniki

A homemade explosive device detonated at the ATM of a bank branch in the Sykies district of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The explosion damaged the cash machine and the building’s facade but no injuries were reported.
