The story of two Swedes, a man and a woman, who were arrested yesterday, Wednesday (10/9), in Neos Kosmos for the murder of a 27-year-old woman, also Swedish, that took place in mid-September in Sweden, is shocking.

Car collides with school bus in Neos Kosmos, leaving chaperone injured

A car crashed into a school bus in the Athens suburb of Neos Kosmos on Wednesday morning, resulting in minor injuries to a chaperone.

At the time of the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Evdoxou and Angylis streets, there was only one minor child on the school bus. The child was not injured.

Greek mafia remnants still active

Two bombing incidents this year at a gas station in Piraeus on March 8 and a liquor store in Kallithea on March 11, as well as a shootout with Kalashnikovs on Syngrou Avenue on March 23, were just the latest incidents in the ongoing turf war between rival gangs despite the recent police crackdown on the so-called Greek mafia.

The recent police operations in the wake of last week's mob-style killing in the Athens suburb of Neos Kosmos reveal that criminal networks thrive on specific sources of illegal wealth, including the smuggling of fuels and tobacco. 

The mafia prospers in areas where the state has consistently failed to establish control, despite the significant cost to the public treasury.

Three men indicted over Greek Mafia executions

An Athens prosecutor indicted two ethnic Greeks from countries of the former Soviet Union, aged 39 and 21, who were arrested in connection with the murders of two prominent members of the so-called Greek Mafia. They were charged with nine felonies and seven misdemeanors. A third person, who is allegedly connected to one of the suspects, was only charged with misdemeanors.

Three suspects in Greek Mafia assassinations led before prosecutor

Three suspects arrested in connection with the assassinations of two prominent members of the so-called Greek Mafia were led before a public prosecutor on Thursday.

The three were allegedly involved in the murder of Yiannis Skaftouros in May 2022 in Dervenochoria and Vassilis Roubetis in a late-night ambush in the Korydallos district of Athens, in June 2023.

Elderly man found dead after Athens apartment fire

Firefighters have found the body of an elderly man after extinguishing an apartment fire in Athens' Neos Kosmos suburb.

The fire service stated that the blaze broke out shortly after 10 a.m. in a bedroom in the apartment. 

Firefighters located the deceased 88-year-old man at the entrance to the apartment.

Seven firefighters and two fire engines attended the scene.
