Manufacturing group Maillis on Thursday announced the closure of its plants at Alexandroupoli and in Italy, resulting in the loss of almost 100 jobs.

The shutdown of the two plants by the group controlled by US fund HIG is a part of its operating restructuring program aimed at the rationalization of production, the company's statement noted.

Two workers were injured, one seriously, in a fire at a plastics factory in Oinofyta in Viotia Thursday afternoon. Thirty firefighters were dispatched to contain the blaze before it spread to adjacent properties on the Athens-Lamia highway, and found that the two men had managed to escape the premises, but not without injury.

Athens-listed Viohalco group is in the final stage of talks for the acquisition of PepsiCo-Ivi's central plant at Oinofyta in Viotia, which ceased production on October 30.
