The stakes of Sunday's European elections are high for Greece's political parties - each for their own reasons - as the results will shape the country's political landscape the day after. 

If the latest opinion polls are confirmed, there will be no big surprise on the night of June 9 regarding the distribution of the 21 seats available to Greece in the European Parliament.

Ruling New Democracy would elect seven to eight MEPs, versus three to four for SYRIA and three for PASOK.

Socialist PASOK has leapfrogged over leftist SYRIZA to second place, while ruling New Democracy leads the pack by 18 points, according to a new opinion poll of voter intentions based on expected valid votes conducted by Prorata. 

With just 12 days remaining before the European elections on June 9, political leaders are employing various strategies to engage the so-called "gray zone" of voters.

Former French president Francois Hollande is set to meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens on Friday. The meeting is scheduled to take place at Maximos Mansion at 4.30 p.m.

Hollande will serve as the keynote speaker at the 2nd European Conference for Entrepreneurship, to be held on Saturday at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Athens. 

As the country enters the final stretch before the European elections on June 9, the constantly sharpening confrontation between ruling New Democracy and main opposition parties SYRIZA and PASOK is shifting to the level of political leaders.

Nikos Androulakis, whose socialist PASOK party is currently polling in third place ahead of next month's European Parliament elections, sought to deconstruct leftist SYRIZA opposition leader Stefanos Kasselakis on Wednesday, portraying him as a puppet manipulated by government-controlled media in an effort to weaken the opposition.

A parallel war between political leaders is under way on social media ahead of next month's European Parliament elections. The race for views and likes is a fierce one, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis using TikTok to increase his influence with younger users. 

The European Commission on Wednesday slammed Georgia for passing a "foreign influence" law targeting overseas-funded NGOs and for repressing mass protests against it, urging Tbilisi to reverse course.
