Istanbul terminates sister city protocol with Rotterdam after Erdoğan's call

The Istanbul Metropolitan Munipality city council on March 15 unanimously terminated its sister city protocol with the Netherland's port city Rotterdam, amid an ongoing diplomatic row between the two countries.

The move comes after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Erdoğan said he ordered Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım to end the metropolis' sister city pact with Rotterdam.

The chairmen of the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Commission have defended Holland in a statement related to the attacks of the Turkish government against authorities in the Hague.

Turkish accusations of fascism in the Netherlands are "completely detached from reality," European Council President Donald Tusk wrote via his official Twitter account on March 15.

Turkey's remarks came after the Netherlands cancelled rallies by Turkish politicians in Rotterdam, which had aimed to drum up support for a referendum that would change the constitution.
