A police officer accused of negligent manslaughter following the fatal shooting of a 68-year-old man in central Greece was granted conditional release on Wednesday.

Five people were arrested in Western Attica on Monday as suspected members of a criminal network active in the possession, supply and sale of weapons and explosives, police said on Tuesday.

The case file accuses the men of possessing and manufacturing explosives, and violating laws on explosives, flares, drugs and antiquities.

A large cache of weapons and explosives was discovered yesterday, Monday (4/11), by the Sub-Directorate of Anti-Trafficking and Trade of Objects within the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime in the area of Western Attica.

A police officer was arrested by the force's internal affairs division for multiple fraud and violations of weapon laws, the Ministry of Citizen Protection said in a press release on Thursday. 

The case file against him includes a female accomplice.

A 63-year-old man on Rhodes is facing prosecution for the illegal possession of weapons and ammunition after police found an arsenal in his home.

The man was arrested on Wednesday for possession of two knives.

A company in Alabama, USA, has installed vending machines in grocery stores that allow consumers to buy bullets for their guns along with their milk.

Two minors were temporarily detained on Thursday for attempting to break into a livestock unit in the northern municipality of Kilkis, alongside two adults, aged 38 and 45.

Police in the seaside resort town of Loutraki in the Corinthian Gulf have seized firearms and ammunition from the home of a 62-year-old man, who has been arrested.

A police raid conducted in western Attica on Sunday resulted in the confiscation of a hunting shotgun, a snub-nosed revolver, as well as multiple of shotgun shells.

In addition to the firearms, a magazine with 33 shells, 159 additional shells, as well as 435 shell casings and some shotgun shell packages were confiscated.

No ammunition for the revolver was found by police.

Greece has one of the highest firearm homicide rates in Europe, according to a survey by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).
