Strike action

The federation of public sector employees, ADEDY, went on a 24-hour nationwide strike on Tuesday over wage demands.

Moreover, ADEDY has called for a demonstration at 11 a.m. in front of the Economy Ministry in downtown Athens, which may cause some traffic problems in the city center.

The umbrella union representing Greece's public sector workers, ADEDY, has announced a nationwide 24-hour strike on Tuesday. 

The union is calling for a horizontal increase of 10% in the salaries of public sector employees, the reinstatement of the two additional salaries in the public sector known as the Christmas and Easter bonuses and collective bargaining. 

Several teachers staged a one-day strike on May 10 to protest violence against educators, resulting in empty classrooms across the country, notably in Istanbul.

The Athens metro will operate from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on May Day, due to the decision of transport workers to participate in a strike, its operator STASY has said.

Buses and the tram in the capital will begin servicing routes from 9 a.m. but will return to depots by 9 p.m.

Public transportation in Greece, particularly in Athens, will cease on May 1 as unions and associations stage Labor Day strikes.

The strikes, organized by major labor unions, oppose the government's decision to move Labor Day to May 7.

They assert that Labor Day is for strikes, not holidays, emphasizing worker grievances.

A nationwide strike in Greece has brought the country's transport networks to a standstill, affecting railways, ferries, buses, taxis, and more. The strike, organized by railroad workers, sailors, and public transport drivers, and supported by various unions, is demanding higher wages, improved working conditions, and increased funding for public services, particularly healthcare.

Private-sector trade union federation GSEE is holding a 24-hour strike Wednesday, aiming to promote public urban transportation, demanding collective labor agreements and personnel hirings. The strike is expected to impact public transport services across Greece.

In a demonstration of solidarity and protest against the government's economic policies, media workers across Greece have initiated a 24-hour strike, aligning themselves with the call for protests issued by labor unions. The strike, which commenced at 5 a.m.

Greek journalists are holding a 24-hour strike on Tuesday to protest the employers' refusal to sign collective labor agreements in privately owned media, low wages and a threat to plurality, their unions said. 

"The strike is another reminder of how Russia continues to strike Ukraine every day," the State Department spokesman explained
