U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on April 14 condemned as dangerous and provocative a military encounter in the Baltic Sea that the United States has described as a simulated attack on a U.S. destroyer by two Russian warplanes. 

A Russian military jet came within a few feet of a US destroyer in international waters in the Baltic Sea during a series of "aggressive" overflights, US officials said on April 13.

U.S. Department of Defense officials have published video footage of an unarmed Russian Su-24 bomber flying over a U.S. Navy ship in the Baltic.

They said the maneuvers happened at the distance of about ten meters, while U.S.officials who spoke for media described them as "aggressive."

Until Jan. 29, elementary military technology described a Russian Su-24 aircraft as a supersonic, all-weather bomber developed in the Soviet Union, and a Su-34 as a jet designed for tactical deployment against ground and naval targets on solo and group missions with counter-fire and electronic warfare counter-measures.

Turkish Foreign Ministry claimed on Saturday that a Russian Su-34 fighter bomber had violated Turkish airspace on Friday.

According to Turkey, the Russian aircraft was repeatedly warned in Russian and English.

The Russian ambassador to Ankara was summoned to the Turkish foreign ministry and a protest was lodged to him in connection with the incident.

As had been previously announced, Russia suspended its visa-free regime with Turkey on Friday.

This is one of the retaliatory measures taken by Russia in response to the downing of the Russian Su-24 bomber by Turkey near the Turkish-Syrian border on November 24 last year.

Russia has also imposed bans on the import of certain Turkish fruits and vegetables.

Moscow on Dec. 30 called for Ankara to arrest a rebel who it claims killed the pilot of the Russian jet downed by Turkey last month on the Syrian border.

A Turkish man who was alleged to have shot a pilot who ejected from a Russian plane that was downed by Turkey one month ago has defended the killing of the soldier.

Investigators in Moscow said on Dec. 21 they were unable to retrieve information from the damaged black box of a Russian warplane shot down by Turkey last month, data the Kremlin hoped would support its version of what happened.
