Voter Turnout at Bulgaria's E-Voting Referendum Surpasses 35 % as of 6PM - Poll

According to the latest figures of Alpha Research polling agency, the voter turnout in the referendum on the introduction of remote electronic voting, which is taking place in Bulgaria simultaneously with the local elections on Sunday, has reached 35.3 % as of 18 o'clock EET.

Plevneliev Urges Changes to Election Rules to Boost Turnout, Reduce Vote Buying

Bulgaria's President Rosen Plevneliev on Wednesday sumbitted to parliament a proposal to hold a national referendum on amendments to voting rules alongside the local elections on 25 October.

In remarks released by his office Plevneliev explained that the changes aim to reduce the weight of manipulated or controlled vote in the overall results and boost voter turnout.

Voter turnout nationwide in Sunday's presidential runoff election as of 9pm, when the polls closed, was 62.04 percent, according to data released by the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC).

In the urban areas, turnout was 61.41 percent; in rural areas — 62.88 percent; and in Bucharest — 65.53 percent.
