Health Minister Andreas Xanthos on Friday announced plans to provide free birth control pills to women covered by national health provider EOPYY as well as uninsured women.

Hospitals in Ankara have refused to admit an HIV-infected pregnant girl with mental disabilities to give birth because she had the "risk of carrying contagious virus."
The girl, whose name remains hidden, was left abandoned after wanting to give birth, but was rejected by a number of hospitals, daily Habertürk reported on March 13.

A mother has given birth to one of the heaviest babies in China.
The newborn is double the average weight in the world’s most populous country.
Coming in at 6.7 kilos the baby was dubbed ‘Kang Kang’, which means healthy in Chinese, by his father.
Although the family have not been named, their surname was given as Wang according to local media.

A court in Istanbul has ruled Istanbul University to pay compensation to a girl whose mother died after she received wrong blood transfusion during a caesarean section surgery at the university's Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Hospital in 2013.
People with HIV report 'dramatic' reagent deficit
The association representing people living with HIV, the virus which causes AIDS, in Greece have written to Health Minister Andreas Xanthos to complain about major shortages in the reagents used in HIV/AIDS tests.
In its second letter to Zervos in the past few months, the association, Positive Voice, described the situation as "dramatic" and appealed to the minister to intervene.

New AIDS diagnoses at lowest level in five years
New diagnoses of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, are at their lowest level in five years, according to figures for 2016 presented Monday by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO), which recorded 453 new cases from the start of the year until October.

AIDS is not over
Four years ago optimism was high that AIDS was in retreat, and could ultimately be eradicated. Back then the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) was boldly predicting "the end of AIDS by 2030." Nobody is feeling so optimistic now.

Child bride dies of hemorrhage after birth in eastern Turkey
A 15-year-old woman who went into labor a week ago in a village in the Mutki district of the eastern province of Bitlis died on Oct. 13 in intensive care after she suffered a brain hemorrhage that it is believed to have stemmed from giving birth at an early age.

Magazine ‘National Enquirer’ reports that Prince could have been suffering from AIDS. The magazine claims Prince had been diagnosed with AIDS six months ago but refused to take medication reportedly saying he was going to battle the disease through prayer.
