A total of 24 migrants who had illegally entered Greece from the land border with Turkey at Evros in northeastern Greece were intercepted on two separate occasions by the Alexandroupoli police department on New Year's Eve and January 1.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has unveiled plans to expedite the construction of a second highway bridge at the İpsala border crossing with Greece.

Police on the border with Turkey have arrested a 42-year-old Turkish national who is being sought in Russia on tax evasion offenses.

The man was arrested at Kipi border crossing in Evros regional unit after crossing from Turkey.

After a passport control by the police, it was established that an international arrest warrant from the Russian authorities was pending against him.

Greek Police and the foreign ministry are in a state of alert after a Greek policeman on trip to the city of Edirne was arrested.

The 41-year-old police sergeant is serving in the Feres police precinct in the Greek-Turkish border area of Evros and hails from the village of Antheia.

Sources say the policemen has been arrested, possibly by the Turkish gendarmerie.

Greece has a right to extend a fence at the border with Turkey in the northeastern region of Evros to avoid a repeat of the tensions last March when thousands of migrants attempted to scale the fence and enter into EU soil.

The Foreign Ministry on Saturday dismissed as "fake news" reports that Turkish soldiers have "invaded and occupied" a patch of Greek land in the northeastern Evros border area.

"There is no foreign force on Greek territory," the ministry said in a statement, responding to reports in British and other media.

Greek Police said it found on Monday afternoon the decomposed body on the banks of the Evros river, the natural border that separates Greece from Turkey.

The local police station of Feres has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The border post at Ipsala (called Kipi on the Greek side) on the Turkish side reopened late Wednesday after being closed for maintenance and upgrade work since Wednesday morning.

Wednesday's closing of the Turkish border post created long queues of vehicles and trucks on both sides of the border.

Greek police discovered the bodies of three women on Oct. 10 near the banks of the River Evros (Maritsa or Meriç) which marks the border with Turkey, and is a crossing for migrants and asylum seekers.
