Remembering Srebrenica

Activists lit candles on Monday evening in central Belgrade to pay their respects to victims of the July 1995 Srebrenica genocide.

The memorial event was held in a park between the Serbia presidency and the city assembly, with police providing security. However, no counter-demonstrators attempted to disrupt it.

An exhibition entitled 'Footsteps of Those Who Did (Not) Cross' opened on Monday at the Srebrenica Memorial Centre, displaying the personal belongings of people who were killed by Bosnian Serb forces in July 1995, as well as items owned by people who survived.

Hundreds of people came to pay their respects as a convoy carrying the remains of 19 victims arrived in Sarajevo before their burial at the Srebrenica Memorial Centre on the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide on June 11.

The Cair municipality in Skopje has announced ahead of the anniversary of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide on July 11 that it will soon install a memorial commemorating the victims of worst atrocity in post-World War II Europe.

Nermin Subašić was only 19 years old when paramilitary groups butchered him and scattered his bones in and around Srebrenica. Nermin was not the only one. More than 8,300 men, women and children were brutally slaughtered during the Srebrenica genocide, one of the darkest and most heinous pages of Europe's recent history.
