North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to "complete" denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and to a planned meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said on May 27.

Japan’s top government spokesman left the door open on March 14 to a possible summit between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and North Korean leader Kim Jung Un to discuss the matter of Japanese citizens kidnapped by Pyongyang’s agents decades ago.

North and South Korea will hold their first summit in more than a decade in late April, the South's presidential office said on Tuesday after a senior delegation returned from a visit to the North where they met leader Kim Jong Un, according to Reuters. 

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met senior South Korean government officials for the first time and said it is his “firm will to vigorously advance” inter-Korean ties and pursue reunification, the North’s official news agency said on March 5.

South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myong-gyon offered on Tuesday high-ranking government talks with North Korea next week at the border village of Panmunjom, a day after Pyongyang suggested talks despite sticking to its nuclear ambitions, Reuters reported.

A South Korean court said on Nov. 6 it had issued arrest warrants for two former presidential aides under investigation  in an influence peddling scandal that has sent President Park Geun-hye's approval rating to a record low. 

The chief of North Korea’s military, General Ri Young-gil, has been executed on charges of corruption, according to a South Korean news agency.

He had been chief of the general staff for North Korea since he was appointed to the role in August 2013 by Kim Jong-un .

The U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, Mark Lippert, was injured in an attack by a man wielding a knife on Thursday in Seoul.

Lippert, 42, was slashed in the face during a forum held in Soul on Korean reunification.

The attacker, a 55-year-old Kim Ki-jong, was shouting anti-war slogans.
