Workers occupy Turkish coal plant’s entrance, block road to oppose privatization
A group of workers blocked a highway for over half an hour on Dec. 1, in protest at the imminent privatization of the YataÄan coal plant in the southwestern province of MuÄla, a day after they began occupying the entrance of the facility.
Despite opposition from workers, a local energy company won the operating rights for the plant after outbidding its rivals last June.
Police crack down on workers protesting at Energy Ministry in Ankara
Police attacked workers with tear gas and water cannon in an effort to disperse employees at the YataÄan thermal plant who chained themselves to the front of the Energy Ministry in Ankara on May 30 to demonstrate against the privatization of their workplace. Several people were also reportedly detained.
