The former general secretary for public revenues, Katerina Savvaidou, will not face trial on charges of attempted breach of trust, according to a ruling by the council of appeals court judges made public Thursday.

In April a prosecutor had asked for Savvaidou to be tried for breach of trust, a charge aggravated by the provisions of laws against the embezzlement of state funding.

A prosecutor on Wednesday sought the indictment of the former general secretary for public revenues, Katerina Savvaidou, on charges of attempted breach of trust.

The government is proceeding to dismiss the National Council for Radio and Television (ESR) as part of a drive to get rid of undesirable officials through legal interventions and amendment. 

The government on Thursday dismissed the head of the General Secretariat for Public Revenues, Katerina Savvaidou, because of misdemeanor charges.

This move has raised questions on the authorities’ commitment to the body’s independence.

No sooner did the government decide to expel Public Revenues General Secretary Katerina Savvaidou from her post, that the tax official announced that she would challenge the decision using all legal means and channels. The cabinet meeting held earlier had resulted in her expulsion and prompted Savvaidou’s anger in a lengthy announcement.

Greece’s general secretary of Public Revenues Katerina Savvaidou refused to resign despite breach of duty allegations in two cases. She announced that the media reports against her are unfounded, hence she informed Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras that she will not resign.

The third bailout agreement for Greece sees the special VAT rate on Aegean islands to gradually phase out as of October 1. It will initially be abolished on the islands of Paros, Mykonos, Santorini, Naxos, Syros, Tinos and Milos.
