During the event, the three former leaders, founding members, younger generation representatives, the current leader, and the other presidential candidates emphasized that PASOK is returning stronger in opposition, aiming to regain governmental influence in the future.

This year’s anniversary coincides with the final stretch leading up to the key leadership election. Former PASOK Presidents, Kostas Simitis, George Papandreou, and Evangelos Venizelos, will deliver greetings. Founding members who signed the September 3, 1974 declaration will be honored.

The Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its establishment by late prime minister Andreas Papandreou on Tuesday, as it heads into a leadership race that will determine its way forward.

The legendary Governor’s Mansion (“Palataki” or “Kyverneion” in Greek) of Thessaloniki, the imposing edifice with its magnificent view, which has hosted heads of state, kings and prime ministers, is being revived.

It took 16 years before Greece could allow the establishment of private universities. Theodoros Pangalos, a former foreign minister with Socialist PASOK in the 1990s, died on Wednesday, aged 84. The news was announced by his family on his Twitter account. 

"Our beloved Theodoros Pangalos died today peacefully at home with his family and close associates by his side. Have a good journey our beloved. We will always remember you with love," the tweet said.
