U.S. restaurant feeds the hungry because it’s the “Greek” thing to do (video)
When employees at Zorba’s restaurant, Virginia Beach, saw a man scrounging through the dumpster to find something to eat, Greek-American restaurant owner Eleni Fotidou was heartbroken. “No one is allowed in 2015 to go to bed starving,” says Fotidou, who offered the man food. He he declined and seemed upset.
Not one to give up, Fotidou took action by hanging signs near the trash cans around her restaurant that encourage anyone in need of food to not feel embarrassed and come to the restaurant for a meal. The Oklahoma restaurant’s warm gesture soon went viral. Fotidou says that her employees have seen only a handful of people desperate enough to search the trash for food, but they are willing to feed anyone in need. As far as Fotidou is concerned, one hungry person is one hungry person too many…
“In Greece, it’s the home of hospitality. We learn to do that, in Greece we are all big families. We always help each other, love each other,” she says.
