Traffic restrictions in the capital for Athens Marathon
Restrictions will start coming into effect Friday and Saturday on several key roads ahead of the Athens Marathon on Sunday when much of the city center will be closed to traffic.
More than 18,500 people have registered to run 42-kilometer race while another 32,500 are to run in seven smaller races, ranging in distance from 3 to 10 kilometers and a 1,200-meter run for disabled athletes.
Key roads on the route between the starting point for the main race at Marathon and the Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro) in central Athens will be closed to traffic between 5 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.
Apart from downtown Athens, the neighborhoods to be affected include Rafina, Pikermi, Pallini, Paiania, Aghia Paraskevi, Holargos, Papagou, Halandri, Filothei and Psychico.
