Romanian film director Jude to be honoured at 49th edition of La Rochelle Cinema Festival
Romanian film director and screenwriter Radu Jude will be honoured at the La Rochelle Cinema (FEMA)Festival, which will take place June 25-July 4. At the 49th edition of the event in France, Jude will be honoured alongside French filmmaker Xavier Beauvois, Lebanese filmmakers Joanna Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, and French composer Gabriel Yared. "An indispensable name of the new Romanian cinema, Radu Jude, whose 'Babardeala cu bucluc sau porno balamuc' (Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn) won the Golden Bear award at the 2021 Berlinale, will display the entirety of his films," according to organisers. Filmmakers and actors who enjoyed such recognition at the previous editions of the festival include Agnes Varda, Bela Tarr, Juliette Binoche, Blake Edwards, Liv Ullmann, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Roman Polanski, Werner Herzog, Anouk Aimee, Olivier Assayas and Elia Suleiman, as well as Romanians Lucian Pintilie and Andrei Ujica. Since 1973, the La Rochelle Cinéma (Fema) Festival has been a big celebration of film, at the beginning of summer, when it presents yesterday's and today's films from all over the world. Radu Jude won the CICAE Award at the Berlinale 2009 with his debut feature film - " Cea mai fericita fata din lume " (The Happiest Girl in the World). In 2012, he directed the feature film "Toata lumea din familia noastra" (Everybody in Our Family), which world premiere took place at the Forum section of the Berlinale. His 2015 "Aferim!" won him the Silver Bear for best director. It was followed by "Inimi cicatrizate" (Scarred Hearts) in 2016, which won two awards at the Locarno International Film Festival and the best director award at the Mar del Plata Film Festival; the documentary "Tara moarta" (The Dead Nation) in 2017 and the feature film "I don't care if we go down in history as barbarians" (2018), the first Romanian film to win the Crystal Globe award at the Karlovy Vary Festival. In 2020, Radu Jude submitted two feature films: "Uppercase Print" and "Iesirea trenurilor din gara" (The Exit of the Trains) to the Berlinale. Both films were screened in the Forum section of the festival. "Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn" won the 2021 Golden Bear for best film award at the Berlin Film Festival.
