Former Thessaloniki mayor rushed to hospital from prison

Former Thessaloniki Mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, currently serving a 12-year sentence for embezzling nearly 18 million euros from municipal coffers, was hospitalized on Monday after complaining of chest pains.

The 67-year-old was rushed from Diavata Prison in Thessaloniki to a nearby hospital for tests.

Ex-Thessaloniki mayor to appeal embezzlement sentence at Supreme Court

The former mayor of Thessaloniki, Vassilis Papageorgopoulos, says he will take his appeal against a jail sentence for embezzlement to the Supreme Court.

“I think everyone realizes that my name has been unjustly blackened,” the ex-public official said in a statement. “The verdict against me was a matter of expediency. I was a scapegoat. My only hope is the Supreme Court.”

Six face prosecutor for bank robberies, terrorist activity

Six people detained in Athens and Thessaloniki on Wednesday in connection to bank robberies and possible terrorist activity faced a prosecutor on Thursday.

The suspects, four Greek men, aged 23, 26 and 30, a Greek woman aged 25 and a 30-year-old Albanian national were detained following police searches of their homes.

Four Bulgarians Busted in Greece for Fake Money Distribution

The police in the Greek city of Thessaloniki nabbed four Bulgarians in an attempt to put EUR 6 thousand fake banknotes in circulation.

One of the Bulgarians has been under investigation for being part of a counterfeit money trade channel which has led the police to the other three persons involved in the scheme.
