The Municipality of Thessaloniki on Wednesday called a meeting of state and nongovernmental bodies to put together a plan to provide the northern port city’s homeless population with shelter during extreme weather.

Authorities in much of northern Greece remained on standby on Monday night after heavy rainfall caused serious flooding, particularly in the region of Evros and across much of the prefecture of Thessaloniki.

Athens was assessing the damage Sunday after a night of protests that degenerated into violence on the sixth anniversary of the police killing of a teenager.

A total of 296 people were detained during the night, a police source said, while 43 suspected of involvement in the rioting in the Greek capital were due to go before prosecutors.

A woman and her husband were in critical condition over the weekend after the man allegedly shot his wife twice in the face before turning the gun on himself last Friday.

According to police reports, the man walked into a florist store in the area of Toumba in the northern port city of Thessaloniki, where his spouse was an employee, and shot her with a rifle.
