Fires: Yellow alert in half of the country – The appeal of the authorities

A yellow alert for a high risk of fire (risk category 3) has been issued for much of mainland and island Greece for today, Monday, August 19, according to the fire risk forecast map issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

Among others in risk category 3 are Attica, many areas of Central Greece, Western Greece, Peloponnese, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Magnesia, Chalkidiki, Mount Athos, Crete, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Ithaca, as well as islands of the regional unit of Rhodes and the northeastern Aegean.

At the same time, for these areas, the Civil Protection Action Plan for dealing with the risks of forest fires is being implemented, according to which, among other things, the implementation of the measure of preventive prohibition of vehicle traffic and the stay of tourists in national parks, forests and “vulnerable” areas is foreseen.

In cooperation with the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, all the relevant state agencies involved, as well as the regions and municipalities of these areas, have been informed so that they are on increased readiness to take measures under their jurisdiction.
