Podemos also turns back on former comrades of SYRIZA

The far-left anti-memorandum bloc that emerged after the split with leftist SYRIZA appears to have attracted the support of the high-flying Spanish party once dubbed as SYRIZA’s “sister party” on the Iberian peninsula, Podemos.

Andalusia MP Jesus Rodriguez addressed supporters of the newly formed Popular Unity party at the its central campaign rally in Athens’ Omonia square on Tuesday evening, where most speakers railed at their former comrades of SYRIZA.

Yet another Greek election will be held on Sunday, the second general election in 2015, which also witnessed a surprise and controversial referendum.

Rodriguez said that the “love of all the citizens of the country (Spain) is now with Popular Unity,” while adding that there is no excuse for anyone to back SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Sunday.

“We need the Popular Unity (PU) to become a dynamic model movement. PU must become a point of reference for those that conscientiously voted ‘no’ (in the July referendum in Greece) …Hasta la victoria siempre,” was the revolutionary exhortation by the Spanish lawmaker.

Supporters of the virulently anti-capitalist and Marxist-inspired newcomer on the Greek political scene were later addressed by PU leader Panagiotis Lafazanis, a former SYRIZA minister, and Zoe Konstantopoulou, the combative outgoing Parliament president and outspoken Tsipras critic of late.
