Turkish airports serve 33.6 mln air passengers in Q1

Some 33.6 million passengers traveled through airports in Turkey in January-March, the country's airport authority announced on April 7. 

The first-quarter figure was down 18.8% from the same period a year earlier on both domestic and international flights, the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) said in a statement.

Turkish airports host 26.2 mln passengers

Turkey welcomed 26.2 million air passengers in the first two months of 2020, the state airport authority announced on March 6. 

The figure was down by 2.2 percent from the same period last year, the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) said in a statement.

International passengers made up 44 percent of total passengers in the first two months of this year.

Istanbul airplane may have crashed ‘due to hydroplaning’

The cause of the plane accident at the runway at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport that killed three and injured 180 people on Feb. 5 may be hydroplaning, according to initial findings.

Water formed due to heavy rainfall on the day of the crash on the runway may have prevented the plane's contact with the runway as the landing gear tires hit the ground.

Turkey's airports serve over 209M passengers in 2019

The number of air passengers -- including transit passengers -- in Turkey totaled 209.09 million in 2019, the country's airport authority announced on Jan. 7.

The January-December figure was down by 0.9% compared to the previous year, the General Directorate of the State Airports Authority (DHMI) data showed.
