July 15 coup attempt and intelligence

Almost a year has passed since the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, but the intelligence dimension of this insurrection is still debated.

Former National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Undersecretary Emre Taner emphasized the "external" dimension of the coup in the Nov. 9, 2016 session of parliament's inquiry commission.

Justice in Turkey tested by sons-in-law

A psychological warfare that components of the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) have recently started is a new perception operation. They started publicizing the full name of pilot Major O.K., who played a huge role in the prevention of the coup attempt on July 15, 2016 by informing the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) that Undersecretary Hakan Fidan would be kidnapped.

Political, financial leg of coup left in the dark: Opposition MHP

The opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has criticized a draft report prepared by a parliamentary commission formed to investigate the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, saying that the political and financial leg of the coup attempt was not revealed by "obstacles put by AKP [ruling Justice and Development Party] members of the commission."

Questions on intelligence gathering, sharing and assessment

First question that stands out in the debate on the tipoff to the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) headquarters on the day of the coup attempt on July 15 is whether it was "an  exact warning" of a coup. The second question is a more general one on whether any intelligence had reached government institutions beforehand on a coup attempt by the Gülen movement.

Three orders to prevent the coup attempt

Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar spent most of his office hours on July 15, 2016 in preparations for the upcoming Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) meeting, due to convene at the beginning of August. Together with Commander of the Land Forces Gen. Salih Zeki Çolak, Akar went through the lists, reviewing names one by one.
