Ministry proposes self-testing for teachers in new school year
Ljubljana – Education officials would like to see in-person learning in the new academic year, said the Education Ministry after Wednesday’s meeting with head teachers, who lament a lack of concrete guidelines. The ministry has urged the government to green-light self-testing for teachers.

Both advocates and opponents of new water law invoke protection of water
Ljubljana – Advocates and opponents of the changes to the waters act, to be put to a referendum vote on Sunday, stressed the need to protect water as they faced off on public broadcaster TV Slovenija on Wednesday evening. However, the advocate said the new law will better protect water, whereas the opponents said it will endanger it.
HIT posts EUR 10m loss for 2020
Nova Gorica – Slovenia’s largest gaming company HIT, whose facilities were closed for almost six months last year, generated EUR 100.7 million in gross revenue in 2020 and a loss of EUR 10.4 million. The shareholders did not confirm the proposal on the sharing of profit at today’s meeting.

No parliament debate on opposition Left’s political programme
Ljubljana – Speaker Igor Zorčič will not call a plenary session to debate the opposition Left’s party programme after the coalition Democrats (SDS) and New Slovenia (NSi) requested this last week, arguing the programme contained elements suggesting the Left could act against the country’s constitutional order.
Janša nominates Marjan Dikaučič for justice minister
Ljubljana – Prime Minister Janez Janša sent a proposal to appoint Marjan Dikaučič, an official receiver, Slovenia’s new justice minister to parliament on Friday after the candidate was put forward by the Modern Centre Party (SMC).
Slovenia presents its EU presidency slogan, logo
Ljubljana – The slogan of Slovenia’s EU presidency in the second half of the year will be Together. Resilient. Europe. According to the Government Communication Office, the slogan was picked as a response to the challenges of the EU and questions about future development. The logo of the presidency was also presented today.

Parliament passes law on transportation platforms
Ljubljana – The National Assembly passed in a 50:36 vote on Tuesday amendments to the act on road transport that create the legal basis for transportation platforms such as Uber or Lyft, changes that the government argues will facilitate the digitalisation of the transport sector.

Another attempt to dismiss Speaker Zorčič fails
Ljubljana – Igor Zorčič remains speaker as only 45 MPs voted to dismiss him in a secret ballot Friday, one short of the needed majority, just like in the first attempt on 30 March after he quit the coalition Modern Centre Party (SMC). Two ballots were invalid while no MP voted against as the centre-left opposition and unaffiliated MPs obstructed the vote.

Justice minister resigns as govt annuls delegated prosecutor procedure
Ljubljana – Justice Minister Lilijana Kozlovič has handed her resignation, the Justice Ministry confirmed for the STA. The reason is the government’s decision to annul the procedure to appoint Slovenia’s two European delegated prosecutors and to publish a new call for applications, which Kozlovič sees no justified grounds for.
