Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) deputy Şamil Tayyar has proposed the reconversion of Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia museum into a mosque, in retaliation against U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Pope Francis called the status quo of Jerusalem to be respected and “wisdom and prudence” to prevail to avoid further conflict on Dec. 6, ahead of an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s  capital, as global concern mounted.

The U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is against international conventions and U.N. decisions, which will be tantamount to a “grave mistake,” presidential spokesperson İbrahim Kalın said on Dec. 6.

Turkish Foreign Minister told U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Dec. 6 that Washington’s plans to move its embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would be a “big mistake.”

President Donald Trump will announce on Wednesday that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will move its embassy there, breaking with longtime U.S. policy and potentially stirring unrest, reported Reuters.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Dec. 6 that the U.S.’s plan to declare Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is “unlawful.”

Israeli officials on Dec. 5 blasted President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s remarks suggesting that Ankara would consider severing ties with the country if the U.S. decides to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

A possible decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as an Israeli capital will result in the cessation of diplomatic relations between Israel and Turkey. This was stated by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, reports sega. 

He also warned his American counterpart that the status of Jerusalem was a "red line" for Muslims, which should not be intersected.
