Japan kills 177 whales in Pacific campaign: Gov't

Japan said on Sept. 26 it killed 177 whales off its northeast coast in an annual hunt that sparks anger among animal rights activists and others.

Three ships which left port in June returned with 43 minke whales and 134 sei whales, the number stipulated beforehand, according to the country's fisheries agency.

Man, 88, shoots self in Pilio

Police in Pilio, central Greece, are investigating the circumstances that led to an 88-year-old man shooting himself in the head with a hunting rifle in front of his house on Friday.

According to local reports, the man, who has not been named, emerged from his house in the village of Aghios Vlasios and shot himself in front of his neighbors.

Stranded migratory birds treated to a ready meal

Members of hunters' and gamekeepers' associations empty bags of corn to feed flocks of migratory birds at the wetland of Nea Kios on the shores of Argolic Gulf near Nafplio, in the northern Peloponnese, over the weekend. Many migratory birds have taken refuge in wetlands in southern parts of Greece because of freezing conditions in the north of the country.

Hunting banned due to cold weather

Hunting has been banned until January 18, the Environment Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The ban was brought into force to protect endangered species - which have already suffered the impact of the cold weather this winter - from poachers amid reports of a spike in illegal hunting around the country.

A 56-year-old Cretan man faced a prosecutor Thursday after allegedly assaulting a 40-year-old Bulgarian woman in the cafe where she works in the port of Iraklio with an iron bar and later attacking her son in her home.

A police search on the suspect's home turned up a hunting rifle, a bow and 10 arrows and four small swords.
