One of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions is losing weight. While some would like to shed off the few extra pounds gained during the holiday season, obesity is an increasing issue throughout the world. According to the World Health Organization, more than 2.1 billion people, nearly a third of the global population, are obese.

New EU Rules for Food Labelling Come into Effect on Dec. 13

The new EU rules for food labelling come into effect on December 13, reports Mediapool.bg.

The goal is to give more and clearer information on the food contents.

According to the new rules, restaurants and cafeterias must inform the consumers on the presence of 14 allergens in the food they serve. Among them are nuts, gluten, lactose, soy and milk.

600 Thousand Bulgarians Suffer from Diabetes – Expert

Some 9% of Bulgarians have diabetes, according to Dr. Natalia Temelkova, endocrinologist at Alexandrovska Hospital in Sofia.

Temelkova noted that the actual number of people with diabetes in the country is probably around 600,000, BGNES reports. Childhood obesity rates in Bulgaria have reached 20%, which increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the expert warns.

Obesity Problem Grows in Romania

Almost 15 per cent of Romania's 4.5 million children are also obese, the Eurostat report said, and the number of grossly overweight children has doubled over the past eight years.

"The main causes of obesity among children are unhealthy lifestyles and the consumption of junk food, which has replaced at least one regular meal a day for many," said Romanian doctor Gabriela Roman.

Turks consume 1.127 billion liters of alcohol per year

Turks consumed 1.127 billion liters of alcohol in 2012, according to a recent response by the Health Ministry to a series of parliamentary questions, which also highlighted that overall consumption fell by 10 percent last year.

The amount of absolute alcohol consumed per person annually stands at around 1.55 liters, which is well below the European average of 10 liters.

Childhood Obesity in Bulgaria Growing at Alarming Rate

Childhood obesity in Bulgaria has increased from 12.3% in 2008 to 13.9% in 2014, a new study among 3,353 children at the age of 7 has showed.

The research was carried out by the National Public Health and Analyses Center and the Regional Health Inspectorates in the country, Bulgarian Telegraph Agency informed.
